Marko Marinic
Music and stories have always gone hand-in-hand for Marko, whether he’s making concert music or concept albums. His music has been featured by ensembles such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Standing Wave Ensemble, and Turning Point Ensemble. Marko enjoys creating music across a wide range of genres and styles, including chamber and orchestral art music, art song, pop music, and musical theatre. Marko is a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia where he studied composition with Jocelyn Morlock, Dorothy Chang, and T. Patrick Carrabré. Like his mentors, Marko is a passionate and dedicated educator. He aims to inspire and support the next generation of artists as a faculty member at the VSO School of Music, where he teaches aspiring composers of all ages. When he isn’t composing, he can be found reading, playing board games with friends, and enjoying a nice cup of hot, black coffee.

Two Dances
Two Dances was composed for the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (LAMP) composition academy. It was inspired by electronic dance music and electronic production techniques. My relationship to dance music is somewhat complicated by the fact that I love groove and rhythm, but am not very good at dancing (at all).
But dancing isn’t about being good, it’s about movement and expression. In the first movement, Hesitate, the music constantly overthinks itself, gets stuck, dances around the subject, and takes some time before it finds its footing. Eventually the music gathers up enough confidence to step onto the dancefloor for the second movement, Animate, where the same musical material is approached from a new angle.
Two Dances was premiered by the Friction String Quartet at the LAMP New Music Festival on June 22nd, 2018.
